A few weeks after Brooklyn received her call we received a packet from her mission president, Stephen W. Forbes. He congratulated her on her call to serve the Lord in the MMM, (Minnesota Minneapolis Mission). He also told her that "Missionary work in the MMM began in 1841 when Joseph Smith sent a party of men to find tall pines along the Black River with which to construct the Nauvoo Temple. These early member missionaries made their first missionary contacts with the Menomonee Indians. From that humble beginning, the Church has grown to eight stakes within the mission boundaries. The Church continues to grow at a solid and sustainable pace. You will teach people from all over the world who have moved to Minnesota. We have large immigrant populations from West Africa, Myanmar, Mexico, Central and South America and Nepal. These people are coming to Christ through baptism in significant numbers. Minnesota is a wonderful melting pot of God's children. You will have a rich cultural experience as you learn to love and serve them."
There were more instructions about what she needed to work on to be ready for her mission. One of the papers talked about clothing guidelines for sister missionaries. Most of the guidelines were things we already knew, but we got a kick out of the picture they sent of proper winter attire for Minnesota. Brooklyn said, "She looks like a dude!" It was true, the sister missionaries were so covered up, you couldn't tell they were girls! hahaha
